It would also be good if you got your birth chart, since there is a lot more than sun signs and some of this information (like moon signs) won't make sense until you have that information. Scorpio is one of the most misunderstood signs in the zodiac, and one of those with the worst reputation. While it does deal with serious issues, it does not deserve most of the negative things that have been said about it. In fact, it can be very positive.
As for polarity with the opposite sign, Scorpio seems to have little to do with Taurus. In a way, Scorpio is more a prefiguration of Pisces. Scorpio is the first encounter with ego death. It completes the process begun in Libra, where the individual entered into a dialogue with another person while both individuals remained separate entities. In Scorpio, the two individuals merge into "the one" on an emotional level, and this is the first kind of ego death. While the above places Scorpio into the scheme of the signs it is, however, not the essence of the sign.
The essence is transformation, and it is inherently mystical. This is not the mysticism of Christianity, which is primarily otherworldly, ascetic, and self-denying. It is a mysticism that sees the power of transformation at work in ordinary reality. Rather than deny the physical universe in order to transcend it, Scorpio will immerse itself in physicality and even drown in it in order to go beyond it.
Scorpio is the first sign to be aware of the heights and depths of the universe. Feeling the relative nature of all things, it will freely declare there is no difference between good and evil, and be misunderstood as a result. Scorpio sees living as a series of deaths and resurrections, and instead of trying to avoid these experiences it will plunge into them headlong in order to experience the revivification that results.
On an ordinary level, this manifests as Scorpio's fondness for living intensely. Nothing is to be done superficially. Obviously, Scorpio is a dramatic sign, one that loves emotion even while it appears pained by its own experiences. It is better for Scorpio to feel bad than to feel nothing.
Concomitantly, Scorpio loves mysteries. It enjoys digging into the depths of any issue or person to find out what is going on inside. As a consequence, Scorpio is associated with investigation, research, and psychotherapy - the last, for two reasons, the probing of the psyche and the opportunity to assist in an individual's self-transformation.
Whether in criticism or in envy, Scorpio is often called an extremely sexy sign. But if one is referring to the simple enjoyment of sex, Scorpio is not necessarily sexy. In fact, the sign is capable of denying itself sex altogether. Yet there is a relationship between Scorpio and sexuality. It is not the search for pleasure that brings a Scorpio to sex, it is the search for transcendence. The orgasm offers one of the few experiences of ego death and self-transcendence that is accessible to the ordinary human being. And it is characteristic of Scorpio that this is also one of the few experiences where ego death and supreme ego gratification are experienced at the same time. Scorpio does not feel the need to separate the two as much as other signs do. To a Scorpio, no matter how attractive and sexy the partner is in other respects, love that does not contain drama and emotional intensity will not endure.
Although the above portrait is fundamentally true to the nature of the sign, it is not an especially accurate portrait of the typical Scorpio. The typical Scorpio often does not appear especially prepossessing or dramatic. More than most signs, Scorpios have a tendency to look ordinary, and they can be easily overlooked - that is until a confrontation. Then it is discovered that running close after Taurus, Scorpio is the second most fixed sign in the zodiac, and it is the only water sign that will fight. In fact, it will even enjoy fighting, for fighting is another way for the individual to enjoy a peak experience. War continues partly because it allows people to live at the height of their abilities. The Scorpio, especially, enjoys this. Like the other water signs, Scorpio is sensitive and easily hurt by others, but unlike Cancer and Pisces, Scorpio will fight, often fiercely, when hurt.
Scorpio's outstanding difficulty with others is the height and depth of its understanding. Much of the emotion Scorpio feels is extremely primitive and does not lend itself to verbal communication and intellectual analysis. Also, much of its knowledge is not easily communicated because it is beyond most people's understanding. When Scorpios try to communicate what they see, understand, or feel, they are often badly misunderstood. They then tend to keep silent because the misunderstanding that results from silence is better than the misunderstanding that comes from failed communication. Less secure Scorpios may react to the misunderstanding by blaming themselves and concluding that they are rotten inside. All the above may result in Scorpio seeming self-involved and brooding. Because of the fixed nature of the sign, neither negative nor positive feelings die away rapidly. This is why many writers have described Scorpio as a sign that seeks revenge, one that will harbor long-term grudges. But Scorpio is also slow to anger. If others do not repeat hurts or add insult upon insult, Scorpio is no more vengeful or grudging than any other sign.
The Libra - Scorpio Cusp - (Oct. 19 - 25)
The Libra-Scorpio (L-S) cusp is an overlapping and admixture of the seventh sign of the zodiac (Libra) and the eighth sign of the zodiac (Scorpio). The L-S cusp is a period that can be characterized by themes of drama and criticism. As when oil is struck and a geyser explodes, tremendous energies can be released from the layers of the unconscious. Such energies must of course be well directed or destruction could easily result. Scorpio II people are powerful individuals who are in touch with the dark side of life. Generally Scorpio II's are not in a big hurry. They generally feel that time is on their side and thus are able to wait. Metamorphic change can be affected in themselves and their lives over many years - slowly and unseen. However, those born in Scorpio II must be careful that waiting for the right moment does not itself become the principle activity, a kind of procrastination. The danger here is that such static behavior will lead to brooding, and brooding to depression. The Scorpio III period takes charm as its central image. Part of the negative side of the Scorpion nature is a tendency to discard friends once they cease to be useful, but the decent native is aware of and fights this tendency. Therefore, police and detective work, espionage and counterespionage, the law, physics or psychology may attract them, and they can become masters of the written and spoken word. Scorpio is the symbol of sex and Scorpions are passionate lovers, the most sensually energetic of all the signs. For them union with the beloved is a sacrament, an "outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace." Their overriding urge in loving is to use their power to penetrate beyond themselves and to lose themselves sexually in their partners in an almost mystical ecstasy, thus discovering the meaning of that union which is greater than individuality and is a marriage of the spirit as well as of flesh. Describing the ways in which Scorpio works in one's chart and life is not easy. The reason is that there seem to be two distinct ways in which Scorpio expresses itself. There is the introverted Scorpio energy, closed, repressed feelings, and fear of self-expression and power. The extroverted Scorpio energy, however, is a powerful force for change, showing itself as passion and intensity. There are some astrological clues, of course, as to which is more likely in a given natal chart, although we can certainly change patterns during the course of a life. First, the overall tone of the chart is a useful guide. When we jump around a chart with rulers, we're going to come across contradictions. Ease and stress are not separate experiences, but two ends of the same spectrum. Confident Scorpio on the 3rd consciously uses its power of speech to emotionally connect with others. Perceptions are profound, but not negative. It's the investigator who is interested in understanding, rather than the one who is looking in the dark corners for evidence of your crimes. If Scorpio is there to punish, power will be abused through dominance or turned inward. It's expensive to repress power. Not only do you and the world miss its positive potential to touch, help, and heal, but, when forced inward and muzzled in the unconscious, power turns toxic. Scorpio needs something to chew on. It's quite paradoxical because it is a fixed sign of transformation. Scorpio is about death and rebirth, not one constant state. Maybe we're frozen like deer in the headlights when faced with desires beyond the level of reason. Beyond Reason, that's a good name for Scorpio. Libra, the previous sign, is about reason. It is the balanced mind, the Cardinal Air sharpened by the perfect equilibrium of detachment and connection. Libra is the first sign of partnership, the first to see others as equal. The journey of individualization that began in the spring with Aries is turning back toward its origins, the universal. We seek ourselves through others.

The seasonal matrix of the signs is laid upon the turning top of the days on Earth. Signs occupy houses. These describe how doors open, how cosmic energy is lived on planet Earth. But the structure of the chart is not that simple. Signs appear to stretch, enlarging and contracting when laid upon the houses. In the most common house systems, two signs are generally found in a given house. Sometimes an entire sign is contained within a house. These intercepted signs are considered to be less powerful because they don't occupy the cusp or border of a house. For example, someone might have 28° Aries rising in his chart. The cusp of the 2nd house is 1° Gemini. Therefore, the sign Taurus does not occupy a cusp. Now, the intercepted sign is still present, it just doesn't occupy the apparently important house cusp. Nonetheless, it is still a very important factor.
I strongly recommend that you consider all of the signs present in a house to fully understand its meaning. If Leo is on the cusp of the 4th house, the door to family is through this sign, but, if the entire body of Virgo is present, an understanding of its meaning will considerably broaden the description of home and family. There are many house systems; there are astrologers who interpret house cusps with orbs and those who don't. Relatively small errors in birth times will change cusps (one degree every four minutes, on average). This gives you additional ruling planets to consider. If you have Sagittarius on the 6th cusp, its ruler, Jupiter, will be examined, but Capricorn is also present, so a look at its ruler, Saturn, will add more meaning. The usual reaction of proud parents at the first glimpse of their newborn Scorpio infant is pleased surprise. "He looks so much more 'finished' than the other babies in the nur¡©sery," they murmur. "He's calmer too-and just look at what a strong body he has." That's right, even the tiniest Scorpios normally have extraordinarily strong bodies. They were designed to match their extraordinarily strong wills.
Scorpio children enjoy a good fight, and they intend to win it. Compromise is not one of their virtues. Even if they pretend to give in, they're just biding their time until the contest can be resumed on another front, where they have the advantage.
As soon as you know the stork is due in November or (hereabouts, go right out and buy a large, sturdy playpen. You'll need one. After baby arrives, you can climb inside it and read a book or eat your lunch, safe and secure be¡©hind the bars. I'd like to tell the already Scorpio- • employed, plus you who are about to pass through the portals, that one of my closest friends is a Scorpio com¡©poser of enormous talent, and I've passed his magic circle test. There's also a tiny Scorpio who lives in my house ! (you notice I still have control-I didn't say I lived in his house) and I'm kind of close to him, too. So I'm not among the enemies of your Scorpio boss. You can relax. But thanks to astrology, I may understand him a bit better than you do. For example, I'll bet you think that, in a crisis, he would just stand there calmly, wearing the same smooth, detached look he puts on when he gets out of his warm bed every morning. He would not. Your Scorpio boss cannot tolerate displays of emotion. He feels that one must keep one's cool at all costs-I mean at all costs. Offhand, who would you say is the one person in your office who is the most self-contained? Which employee seems to have the most inner confidence, without being obvious about it, the steadiest eyes, the least excuses and the most poise? If there's someone on the staff with those qualities, does he give you the feeling he can take a com¡©pliment or leave it alone? Is he secretive about his personal life? Does he have a master plan for his future? Assuming all this is true, one more question: are the other employees a little afraid of him? There's no doubt about it. He's a Scorpio.
More than anyone else with your firm, the Scorpio em¡©ployee is the master of his fate and the captain of his soul. He's entirely self-motivated and single-minded. No one else can be so resourceful and so sure of his own potential The Scorpio has the power to make or break his own life, and he knows it. The next day, our hero was at his desk at nine a.m., alert, calm, and waiting for Mr. Fink to buzz him. He had stayed up all night completing the necessary briefs, and his wife wasn't too happy because he had to cancel the dinner reservations he had made earlier in the week to celebrate their anniversary. At nine forty-five his boss's secretary apologetically informed him that Mr. Fink had changed his mind. He had decided to hold the con¡©ference the following week. It was such lovely spring weather, he thought he'd play a few holes of golf with some clients from out of town. She murmured that her boss had said something about "hoping it didn't cause him too much inconvenience." You may suppose that, at this point, the Scorpio reached into his desk for a .45 automatic and headed for the golf course. But that's not the way the cookie crumbled. How did the Scorpio react to such boorish behavior? He simply shrugged. He smiled a cool, mysterious controlled smile, handed the secretary the finished memorandum, and said courteously, "Will you put this on Mr. Fink's desk please? I am going home to get a few hours sleep. I'll be back in time for my two o'clock appointment." Then, with the patience of Taurus and the discipline of Capricorn, he called his wife, told her he would be home for lunch and left. Moral: That Scorpio lawyer is aiming for a partnership at Fink, Brink, Link and Katz. Are you wondering if his wife had his lunch ready on time, after her disappointment the night before? Of course she had his lunch ready on time. The wife of a Scorpio? If she wanted to have any more an¡©niversaries to celebrate, she did. She's not his boss. Mr. Fink is his boss. This year.
If you're important enough to the future of your Scorpio employee, you too can be a Mr. Fink. It's on a par with being immune to nuclear power, but I don't think you should let it turn your head to the place where you get over-confident. You can expect the Scorpio man or woman to accept the inevitable with grace, if the stakes are high enough. The Scorpio employee never joined the game. He was always too busy with his programming. One day, a secre¡©tary asked him why he never contributed to the office hc>bby. He gave her one of those hypnotic Scorpio stares and said, simply, "He pays my salary. I work for him."
"What's that got to do with it?" she wanted to know. "lie yells at you in front of the staff every morning and hfr, hasn't given you a vacation for two years. He never piiys you a compliment. Don't you have any pride?"

There are several legends associated with the chrysanthemum. Both Ancient Chinese and Japanese folklore explains the origin of the chrysanthemum. The Chinese legend tells the story of an elderly emperor who had heard of a magic herb that would give him eternal youth. This herb was said to grow on Dragonfly Island (present day Japan) in the Sunrise Sea and could only be picked by young people. The elderly emperor therefore dispatched 24 children on what proved to be a long and hazardous journey...battling perilous storms and staving off attacks by sea serpents. However, much to their dismay, when the young group finally arrived at the island, they found it totally deserted...and there was no sign of the magic herb. All they found was a flower...the golden chrysanthemum...which today still symbolises the Chinese people's ties with their country. Later, Mao Tse Tung replaced the imperial golden yellow with the red of the People's Republic. The Japanese tale revolves around the God Izanagi and the Goddess Izanami, who were sent to Earth across a bridge of clouds because there were too many deities residing in heaven. When she arrived on Earth, Izanami created the Gods of Wind, Mountains and Sea, but perished miserably in the flames that erupted while she was creating the God of Fire. Izanagi, who missed her desperately, followed Izanami into a dismal place known as the Black Night. After viewing a great number of vile sights, he finally caught a glimpse of the Goddess but was immediately pursued by the Old Hag of Black night. Fleeing back to Earth, Izangi decided to cleanse and purify himself in the river. The items of clothing he dropped onto the ground turned into twelve Gods and his jewels became flowers...one bracelet transforming into an iris, a second into a lotus flower and his necklace becoming a golden chrysanthemum. However, one German legend has no such association with the origin of this flower and instead, is tied to Christianity. The tale tells of a peasant family who dwelt in the Black Forest. Sitting down to a meager meal one chilly Christmas Eve, they they heard a wailing noise coming from outside. Upon opening the door, they discovered a beggar who was shivering and turning blue with cold. They wrapped him in blankets and shared their food with him. Instantly, the blankets were shed, revealing a man dressed in shining white clothes with a halo encircling his head. Proclaiming himself to be the Christ Child, he then left the small cottage. The following morning, outside the door where he had stood, were two white chrysanthemums. Today, many German people bring white chrysanthemums into their homes on Christmas Eve, believing that by doing so, they are providing shelter for the Christ Child.

The precise identification of some of these precious stones is uncertain. For example, in the same passage of the Revised Standard Version of Exodus, diamonds, sardius, and carbuncle (an alternative name for the garnet) are also included in the list of twelve biblically significant gemstones. Its name is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word upala or "treasure stone." It was later referred to in Latin as opalusopallios, meaning "to change color." Although somewhat more soft and fragile than most other gemstones, an opal can last a lifetime if mounted in the proper setting and given ongoing care. Generally, the thicker the opal, the more durable and it should be set in a mounting that holds the stone all the way around its edges (such as a bezel rather that prongs).
Perhaps no other gemstone has been as loved and as feared over the centuries as the opal, the general belief being that this jewel will bring bad luck if not worn by those born in October. This is not necessarily true and can probably be traced to a novel written by Sir Walter Scott (entitled "Anne of Gierstein"), in which the heroine has her life force caught in the beautiful opal she wears and then dies when the fire in the opal is extinguished. This belief may have also been compounded by the story of King Alphonso XII of Spain, who ruled from 1874 to 1885. He presented an opal ring to his wife, who died soon afterward. Before the funeral, the King gave the ring to his sister, who also died a short time later. The ring was then passed to the King's sister-in-law, who expired within three months from receiving the gift. Understandably startled by these tragedies, the King decided to wear the ring himself, but also died within a short period of time. These negative connotations were somewhat dispelled during the time of Queen Victoria. Taking a great liking to the gemstone, she presented many fine examples to members of her family as wedding gifts and gradually, the opal came back into favor. The famous actress, Sarah Bernhard, wore opals and preferred them to all other gemstones. In Hindu lore, legend tells of a woman desired by three Gods at the same time and whom the Eternal transformed into a magic cloud. In order to recognize her, Brahma endowed her with the color of the azure, Shiva tinted her with fiery red and Vishnu gave her the splendor of the Sun. The Ancient Arabs believed that opals fell from the heavens in flashes of lightning, acquiring their marvelous fiery colors in the process and the Greek nation thought that an opal bestowed foresight and the gift of prophecy upon the wearer. To the Romans, the opal was a symbol of hope and purtiy. Indeed, Pliny (the ancient Roman scholar) wrote that this stone had "the fire of the ruby, the brilliant purple of the amethyst and the sea green of the emerald, all shining together in incredible union." Considered to possess the ability to prevent disease and strengthen the sight, the opal also provided the spirit of truth and the perfection of beauty. It is reported that the Roman Senator Nonius chose exile rather than surrender a large opal to Marc Anthony and a stunning example known as the orphanus was set in the crown of the Holy Roman Emperor. This stone is also to be found in the crown jewels of France and Napoleon presented Josephine with a magnificent opal that flashed a brilliant red. He called this opal "the burning of Troy," thus making his Empress comparable to the famous Helen. In the Middle Ages, the opal was particularly treasured and was known as the ophthalmios or "eye stone" due to the widespread belief that it was benefical to eyesight. Until approximately four centuries ago, the opal was believed to combine all the virtues of the various colored stones, whose hues it united in a sparkling light. However, during the Black Plague in the Fourteenth Century, this gemstone acquired a more evil connotation...it was thought to lose its luster when the owner died of this deadly disease. Considered to be a good gem for thieves, in that it has the powers of invisibility and astral projection, the opal is also thought to preserve blond hair. In ancient times, the image of a falcon would be carved on a topaz to help earn the goodwill of kings, princes and magnates. Known to the Greeks as the Stone of Strength, it was thought by that culture to possess the power to increase strength and make the wearer invisible. The Romans thought it could improve eyesight and the Egyptians wore this jewel as an amulet to protect them from injury, believing it to be colored with the golden glow of Ra, the mighty Sun God. During the Middle Ages, the topaz fell out of favor. It was used occasionally in ecclesiastical jewels, but little else. However, it was deemed to heal physical and mental disorders...as well as prevent death. A topaz weighing over four pounds was presented to Pope Leo X (1475-1521) to commemorate his Silver Annivesary as head of the Catholic Church.

Pure topaz itself is colorless, but it does occur in a broad range of colors...yellow, pink, peach, gold, green, red and brown, for instance...with some natural yellow stones heated to become permanently pink. Blue topaz is another variety of this stone, but is relatively rare in a natural state. It is one of the few gem minerals that, under suitable conditions, will grow into enormous crystals. The topaz is a transparent stone with a vitreous luster. The most rare specimen of this gem is known as Imperial Topaz, orange-red in color and so named because it was used in the jewelry of the 18th and 19th Century Russian Czarinas. The most famous topaz is of the colorless variety and was originally thought to be a diamond. It is a 1,680 carat stone known as the Braganza and is set in the Portuguese Crown Jewels. Another beautiful example may be found in the Green Vault in Dresden (Germany), which houses one of the world's most important gem collections. The Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., which exhibits some of the largest gemstones ever faceted, also houses a teal-green topaz of almost 1,500 carats in its "Hall of Giants." The topaz is one of the traditional gems for the 4th, 16th, 19th, 23rd and 50th Wedding Anniversaries, and the pink variety has a special association with the planet Mercury.

Thus, the Norse/Saxon God of War, Courage and the Sword now took precedence over the Roman God of War and the day was renamed Tiwesdaeg in honor of this Nordic God.
The Saxons believed that the Norse Gods of Scandinavia lived in a type of heaven known as Asgard. The King of these Gods was named Woden or Odin and he had a built in Asgard a great hall called Valhalla. It was to Valhalla that all the dead heroes were carried by the beautiful Valkyries, who rode winged horses. Tiw was a son of Woden and helped his father to choose which heroes would go to Valhalla. A wise and magnificent warrior himself, Tiw spent most of his time engaging in great battles. According to legend, Tiw fought the fierce wolf called Fenris. He managed to bind the evil creature but in the process, had his hand bitten off by the vicious fangs of the beast. Saxon warriors strove to be like Tiw...to fight on toward victory even though they might be tired, hungry or wounded. To endure hardship in pursuit of triumph was to be remembered in songs around the feast table. During a time when there was no media and little writing, to be celebrated in song was to be a famed celebrity.
Fat Tuesday is the designation generally given to the day just prior to the beginning of Lent. Lent is a forty day period of fasting for many Christians and it always begins on a certain Wedensday prior to Easter. As the day before...always a Tuesday...is the last chance for revelry and also the last chance to use up perishables such as butter, lard and other fats, that day has become known as Mardi Gras, which is French for Fat Tuesday. The celebration of Mardi Gras is probably most famous for its associations with New Orleans, capital of the State of Louisiana in America. In the British Isles, Fat Tuesday is known as Shrove Tuesday, but commemorates the same festival. Also referred to as Pancake Day, one of the best known customs of Shrove Tuesday is that of the Pancake Race at Olney in Buckinghamshire, where it has been held since 1445. This race came into existence when a woman cooking pancakes heard the shriving bell summoning her to confession, whereupon she ran to church wearing her apron and still holding her frying pan. Thus, without knowing it, she began a tradition that has lasted for over 500 years. According to current rules, only women may participate in the race. Each contestant must wear a dress (no slacks or jeans allowed), an apron and a hat or scarf. She must also carry a frying pan containing a hot, cooking pancake, which must be tossed three times during the race. The starting point is the market square and the course winds for 375 meters before ending at the church. The first woman to arrive must serve her pancake to the bellringer and receive a kiss in return. The winner is also awarded a prayer book from the vicar. According to an ancient rhyme, Tuesday's child is full of grace.
