Question:
Why do astrological believers tell skeptics to go get educated?
2012-02-25 15:41:49 UTC
What exactly do you think the skeptics are doing? There seems to be little credible evidence to support any of the interpretations astrology makes. There is no evidence suggesting that any of the planets used in astrology represent what they entail.
I can't seem to find any ounce of credible readings written by significant numbers to back up any claims made by astrology. What I do know for fact is astrology seems to base their interpretations on faulty correlations. That a cause is related to correlated events. That already in itself is null.

The opposite of skepticism is gullibility and that is something I am not - gullible. I do not accept information blindly without questioning, and searching for the answers that the information may not be accurate. But for some reason the more questions you ask the more hostile people get. Yikes.

Astrology COULD be accurate. It could be everything staunch believers entail it to be so - that it works. That's possible! But it has not been proven yet.

What exactly do "skeptics" need to educate themselves on? We are looking for answers, searching for answers, asking key questions that need to be answered. I don't know about you, but that does not sound like someone that does not want to be educated. If by "get educated" you mean, "don't question, believe my irrational views on astrology, accept my reality" than alas, that's something skeptics will not do.

Actually, no it can't. Astrology has already been comprehensively disproven.

The science of medicine has been known, and is recorded, from the earliest western civilisations (Assyria and Egypt). So has the belief in astrology.

If you look at what has happened with medical textbooks, and clinical practice, many methods have been tried; some have worked, some have failed. As the methods which worked were observed and recorded, medical opinion changed, and medical practice improved.

Greek doctors were better than Egyptian doctors (we know this, we have case studies), because they had a more advanced medical understanding (being later). Roman doctors were better again. Renaissance doctors were much better than Roman doctors, eighteenth century doctors were better than Renaissance doctors.

And of course today we have hospitals, antibiotics, anaesthetics, trauma management, chemotherapy ....

Today we can cure diseases the Egyptians couldn't even diagnose.

We know that medicine is a real science, because it has improved.

.......

What has happened with Astrology?

The Assyrians and Egyptians had a lot of people who studied astrology, and claimed it gave spectacular results. They were never able to come up with hard evidence for this.

The Greeks were quite a bit smarter. But there were still astrologers, and they all claimed ot produce spectacular results. But they never produced any evidence of this.

Greek astrologers did astrology exactly the way the Egyptians had done it.

Roman astrologers did astrology the same way that the Greeks, and before them the Egyptians, did. And they said they got spectacular results. Only there was never any evidence.

Fill in the rest yourself.

Look at how much better a modern doctor is than an ancient Egyptian doctor.

Then look at how much better a modern astrologer is than an ancient Assyrian one. He isn't.

So astrology is bogus. Case closed.

Except for the retards.

You owe me $10.

(But if you move really quickly, you can edit that nonsense, or even delete it entirely.

Then you can pretend you never never said such a thing.

We all know that this is how astrology 'works')

>The Assyrians and Egyptians had a lot of people who studied astrology, and claimed it gave spectacular results.<

The Egyptians and Assyrians???????? ROFLMAO!! Who told you that? James Randi? And you think other people are retards? Hey pal, how about providing some evidence for that claim. Cite an historian or even an astrologer who is not an historian who said that. Just for once do what you want others to do: provide evidence of your claims that the Egyptians and Assyrians "had a lot of people" (LMAO) who claimed .... I'll bet ten dollars to a hole in a doughnut you can't even name an Egyptian or Assyrian astrologer. You're making a fool out of yourself. Keep it up. I'm enjoying the entertainment, but you really need to stay in school. There's little room in the real world for high school dropouts.

And there is this howler: "Or, why exactly, a few months ago, Astrology claims that what was it- Venus or Mercury was in Pisces. When a simple glance through my telescope suggested otherwise."

Telescope? That must be some telescope you have chump that you can see Mercury when it is so close to the Sun. And at night no less when the Sun is below the horizon. Professional astronomers can't even do that. Oh yeah you can't tell the difference between the two planets so maybe you saw Venus and thought it was Mercury. Oh and learn the difference between signs and constellations so you don't sound so ignorant. Does your mother know how much time you spend on the computer?

It's very simple. I've already discredited 90% of the garbage you cite here:

You say you've never blocked people who refute your nonsense and yet I know two you've done that to without their blocking you. You lie.

Point two: It is utterly ignorant to think you can intelligently criticize a subject that you know nothing about. Do you want to know how silly your criticism sounds to an educated person? Try this: "People who believe in astronomy are gullible fools because they believe in holes in space that suck light." That, little boy, is the level of your criticism.

You ask for evidence, you get it, then deny it exists just like James Randi. You rely on a stage magician's word that there is no evidence for astrology rather than the word of a psychologist with a PhD in statistics with 50 years of experience to the contrary (Gauquelin). In short, you're a fraud. You've adopted the wholly illogical "It can't be true, so it isn't true" position. You are everything you accuse astrologers of being and writing long, disjointed, uninformed opinions will never change that. I repeat: no one not even a 17 year old boy, can intelligently criticize a subject about which he is ignorant. This is not a demand for proof by me. It is a demand for competence and you lack that quality completely.

Now quick write something snotty and stupid then give your toady a BA so no one can respond. Pathetic.

It depends… Does “some political agenda” include “ensuring a constant stream of funding”? Because that’s the only reason I can come up with for the “more educated 'believers'” to continue in their feigned belief in Catastrophic Global Warming. I wonder what would happen if the governments of the world suddenly announced: “OK, we accept Global Warming is real and we must do all we possibly can to avoid it. But that is going to cost a fortune, so, to help cover the cost, we’re going to cut all funding in Climate Science.” Do you think the climate scientists would respond with… a) “Phew! At last! OK, so I’m out of a job, but at least the planet is saved!” or b) “No. NO! You can’t do that! There’s, um? Much more to learn! We don’t want to cut CO2 too much – we might cause Catastrophic Global Cooling! You must keep paying us so that we can monitor the situation to make sure you do it right!” Etc., etc., etc. What do you reckon?

You are mistaken dear friend.

It's not the astrological believers telling the skeptics to get educated, it is the skeptics doing it. But they don't do it in a pleasant way, they often come on here saying "you lot are stupid, science or christianity is real"

We are all on here to enjoy a good discussion about astrology, not to be insulted. We all appreciate that everyone has different beliefs and we don't venture off to the religion and science sections to insult the people there telling them they are idiots or stupid, so we expect the same respect.

These people come on here with their narrow minded views and irritate the majority of users on here, what do you expect.

To get educated on astrology.

Astrology is NOT about Sun-signs (the "what sign are you" garbage).

Astrology is NOT about the little blurbs called "horoscopes" in the daily newspapers (or wherever).

Those who truly understand what astrology is and isn't are not so skeptical. Some of my BEST clients (especially in terms of referring new clients to me) were the engineers and scientists who came out of curiosity and were skeptical.

i think you're fighting yourself. You really do believe astrology; you're fascinated by it, in lust with it. Otherwise you wouldn't be here with this long question nor would you be in this section constantly attacking others beliefs.
